The first time I realized that I can connect with people is when I worked in a nursing home in memory care, that is where I found my skill in empathy and compassion for others, when I interacted with patients I would greet them with a smile and be genuinely happy to meet them, I would listen to their stories, complaints and frustrations by putting myself in their place, the residents trusted me and felt safe with me. when they talk to me I can see their stress level lowering and their guard lowering.
I read an article on psychology today (2024), on ways to have a meaningful connection with others, they suggested to greet people like they are your best friend, this gives a positive atmosphere and could uplift them, and when talking to them look for their strengths, find the best in them and acknowledge them, this builds “mutual respect and admiration”, this is what I try to do with my husband, friends and co-workers to help with a better relationship, and the best way to have a meaningful connection is through play, such as playing games together, joking around, listening to music together, this helps to relieve stress and promote well-being.
